Vintage Piña Suksok Table Linens

A very special find: vintage pure piña table linens. Handwoven piña with suksok or an inlaid weave depicting a traditional rice farming scene with a kalabaw or Philippine Carabao, and a bahay kubo or nipa hut. In excellent condition but requires extra love and care. Piña pieces with suksok patterns as intricate are no longer made today; these are quite rare. A beautiful heirloom. Please take care of them.

Sold as a set of 8: 4 placemats, 4 napkins. 1 Table Runner sold separately. Unused, no flaws other than slight discoloration due to age.

Piña, woven from the fibers of pineapple leaves, is known for its delicate texture and as the finest among Philippine textiles. Piña weaving is an ancient Philippine craft that remains completely manually done. An incredibly tedious process, fibers are extracted from pineapple leaves through vigorous scraping, typically with a coconut shell or a broken plate. The fibers are sorted, and the finest, called liniuan, are reserved for textile. These are washed, scrubbed, then sun-dried. Next is pagpanug-ot, wherein the liniuan fibers are knotted by hand to create one long, seamless thread, which is then woven into cloth.

The pattern is created through suksok, which means to insert—a process of inserting thread wefts during weaving to create an inlaid pattern.
